General plan / The name

Why rails.

A name is a mechanism statement. This one has been true for a hundred and eighty years.

Sheet 05 · The name
Word — rails
Claims — 3
Metaphor — load-bearing
A train never chooses its path. The interlocking chose it in advance — physically, so a conflict cannot be set.— the property this project is named for

Three claims in one word

Rails as determinism

"On rails" means the path is fixed and the ride is smooth. An agent on RAILS can only go where the owner drew track.

Then → Now

Interlocking → allowlist

Rails as guard

A guardrail does not watch the road; it is the road's shape. Safety built into the structure — no sentry required.

Then → Now

Buffer stop → halt switch

Rails as finance

"Payment rails" is what the industry already calls money infrastructure. This is that layer for agent funds.

Then → Now

Timetable → policy sheet

Chronology

  • 1840s

Railways learn the hard way that two trains on one track is a system that fails at machine speed. Fixed signals and written rules follow.

  • 1850s–

Interlocking arrives: conflicting routes become physically impossible to set — safety moves from human attention into the track layout itself.

  • 1870s–

Standardized timetables turn thousands of daily departures into one public, legible document. Anyone can read when anything moves.

  • Now

Autonomous agents hold keys and move value at machine speed, unattended. Same problem, new yard. RAILS applies the 180-year-old answer: standing signals, drawn routes, a public board.

Dates are rounded on purpose — this is a lineage, not a citation.
